Voice Training

Whether you’re self conscious about speaking in public, or don’t like the sound of your own voice, we have a solution. Taking vocal skills sessions with our expert voice coaches will develop a strong, healthy voice, and you’ll soon be speaking with ease, confidence and impact.

What we offer

We offer voice training in both private tuition and in weekend Vocal Confidence group workshops.

During both forms of training, you’ll learn the secrets that have transformed the voice and speech of our great stage actors. We’ll teach you effective techniques that give you the skills to project your voice, articulate your words brightly and cleanly and bring out the clearest, richest tones of your natural voice.

Our vocal skills sessions and workshops are useful for:

  1. Professional speakers. Whether you’re a preacher, a teacher, a business leader or a barrister, your vocal presence is crucial. We can give you the confidence to control your voice and create the impression you want.

  2. If you feel voice doesn’t represent you. Tensions from daily habits, life events and self-image can impair our full, natural sound. If you feel the sound of your voice does not fully reflect who you are, we can help you unlock those tensions and re-awaken your true voice. For accent related issues see our accent training section.

  3. Voice for people with vocal damage. If you often lose your voice, run out of breath or get voice related sore throats, something is wrong with how you are producing your sound. Voice training can help alleviate this and prevent permanent damage.

Why do we like some people's voices and not others?
Engaging speakers have warm, natural healthy voices; expressive use of tune and emphasis; and clear articulation. All of which you can we can teach you to develop. Unused muscles, even the tiny ones that control speech, become tense and flabby and no longer have the energy to make efficient movement. Thus speech sounds and the voice become dull, indistinct and un-interesting. But the right exercise can regain the fitness in these muscles and transform the way you sound.

Why is my voice dull, flat, thin or tense sounding?
Usually because there is tension in your system. This can restrict both the original vibrations of the voice and its amplification. Tension could be in your posture, your breathing system, the alignment of your head and neck, or localised in the throat or mouth. All these different kinds of tension inhibit full vibration. And full vibration is what you need for a rich, attractive, healthy sounding voice.

How can you change the sound of your voice?
By uncovering the original, tension free working of your system. Using our voice 'mechanics' we can help your body return to its normal functioning and the result of this is automatically a fuller, clearer voice.

How we work

We work on your:

  1. Body & Breath: A lot of issues with vocal confidence, tone and tiredness have their cause in the breathing system of the body. This, in turn, relies upon the alignment of the skeleto-muscular system. Our coaches will teach you breathing exercises to help you re-discover a natural, efficient breath; physical exercises to help unlock body tensions that are negatively effecting your breath and voice; and sound exercises to help you connect your spoken voice with this more efficient system. 2. Confidence: Learning how to align your body and release tensions will do wonders to maximise your physical presence and vocal impact. A body that stands strong, free of unnecessary tension and breathing deeply is powerful - think of a tiger...

  3. Speech Muscles: Tensions in the organs of speech (jaw, tongue, face) and vocal tract (throat) can also cause voice issues. Again, physical exercises are taught to help you unlock these tensions. These ‘Mouth Yoga’ exercises are also great preparation for any special speaking event. Tongue twisters and rich, complex text are also used to help sharpen and clarify your speech. Read more...

  4. Pitch, Range and Resonance
Your coach may also explore exercises with you to help you use the natural amplification of your voice (resonance) more fully, and to explore a wider and more expressive pitch range.

  5. Vocal Health
Learning to breath, stand and speak correctly will bring an end to voice loss and fatigue. Overcoming the limits of a tense, flat vocal tone, and a tired, lost voice will also prevent permanent damage to your vocal folds. This training is a must for teachers, lawyers, salespeople - anyone whose voice is the heart of their trade. We can also give expert and tailored advice as to how to protect your voice within your specific circumstances.

The result of all this precise work in the hands of our skilled coaches? A stronger, richer, more attractive voice that you can rely on. And that truly represents who you are.
